In October we ended the 5th annual of the Playful Architect festival with the Playful Temple Builders exhibition. We are already preparing a new project for you, but before we start, let us take a look at what happened during this year’s project.
Its aim was to familiarize architecture to the children in a fun way and to teach them about one of the biggest eras of our history, not by mere description of what art looked like at the time, but also by telling them what people used to wear, what their manners were like, something about their hygiene together with story about invention of perfume. To top it all off, we recounted slightly gruesome old stories of this period, because nothing helps to memorize new piece of knowledge like a scene that feels like straight out of a movie.
Of course, we explained many details about architecture as well. For example, the reason why the baroque styled architecture is so majestic, gilded and decorative. With it we said something about the importance of religion for the man of the time. Baroque was the last universal style of architecture as well as one of architectural heights. The biggest influence it had on buildings of the Church as it was its flagship in the fight for Recatholization of Europe and Christianization of America. That’s why we can see mostly churches and temples on the drawings made by the children.
During almost every tour we had debates on various topics such as: The influence of antique culture on baroque period; The name origin of one of Prague’s districts, Troja and how it is connected to the Troja Château; How is it that we can find baroque culture amongst American Natives or How did the cult of Saint John Nepomuk find its way in the depths of Amazon forest.
The children as well as we enjoyed the tour and left home full of new experience. This we can tell from all the complimentary letters sent by the schools involved.
We are currently preparing the Baroque Culture through the Eyes of the Children exhibition for foreign destinations.
For next year we are preparing a new topic “100 Years of Czechoslovakian Architecture” commemorating the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Czechoslovakia and showing the its architecture from year 1918 to the present date.
